Directions for submitting articles

Note to Authors:

Please read carefully the following directions for submitting articles for publication. Our overall goal is for uniformity in the submission process. We at the Global Dental NewsJournal thank you in advance. Send your article.

It’s a digital medium...

We assume that our readers have a computer, so all articles, manuscripts and any release forms should be on diskette. Please use Microsoft® Word as the word-processing program. The advantages of this program will become evident when following the directions on how to submit (e.g. your footnotes are automatically put in order, spelling is a non-issue, and uniformity in design can easily be maintained). So, do yourself a favor if you don’t have the program, then you may want to get it.

Manuscripts

Submit one printed copy, double-spaced on one side of the page only. All pages should be numbered consecutively (MS Word does this automatically). Keep a 1-inch margin all around the page. Submit a diskette of the finished manuscript. No pictures or charts should be in this section: indicate where the charts, pictures or graphs should be in the manuscript by: (pic #1) or (chart #2). Online graphics are compressed for better flow.

Set up pages as follows:

  • PAGE 1: Title of article and author(s). List all degrees, titles, organizations and affiliations. Include a short bio, if you’d like. Picture(s) of the author(s) can be submitted; follow the directions under Photos, Slides Etc. Full address, phone number, e-mail address, and fax number for all authors must be listed.
  • PAGE 2: Title of article again with a short abstract of the article (50 to 100 words).
  • PAGE 3: A short paragraph citing the immediate clinical advantages, uses or future applications of the article.
  • PAGE 4: The article itself.

References

All references will appear at the bottom of the page on which they are cited (when using Microsoft Word; they will also be automatically updated and renumbered when adding or deleting footnotes.

Arrange footnotes as follows:

Author(s), title of article, where published, volume, pages, date.
EXAMPLE: Taddese A. Nah SY. Selective opioid inhibition of small nociceptive neurons. Science Journal. vol. 270: 1366-9, 1995 Nov.

Don’t include unpublished data or heresay in the footnotes. You can cite these things in the text only.

Trade Names

Try to use all generic names for products. You can put the brand name in parentheses - which is easier, in most instances, for our readers to follow. Including the name of the manufacturer is also helpful.

Photos, Slides, Etc.

Pictures should be in slide form. If you only have the negative of a print, that will work - but is not preferred. If all you have is a print, send it, although the quality may suffer a bit.

35mm slides can be submitted on disc (scanned) or as original slides. Material will be returned.

Helpful hints on intraoral photography can be found in the special report on photography in the Journal of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, vol. 8, num. 2. Call 1-800-543-9220.

Charts and graphs should have a professional graphics look. (Make them in Microsoft Word or have them done professionally.) Each graph or chart must be on a separate page and numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in the article. Footnotes relating to graphs or charts must appear on the same page as the chart.

Radiographs must be originals. Submit as slides, appropriately labeled.

Please use good judgment and don’t submit anything sloppy.
